The expectation of non-stop joy and excitement that comes with the holiday season can sometimes be overwhelming, and actually lead to stress, anxiety, and all sorts of other complicated feelings. Here are a few ways to keep the intensity of the holiday season from getting the best of you.
Set realistic expectations
The holidays can come with a lot of pressure, whether it’s to make each day feel extra special, get along with family and friends, or spend a lot of money on gifts. But it’s important to step back and understand that many of the holiday stereotypes are unrealistic. Everyone’s holiday experience is different, so just remember that it's okay if it’s not always perfect or peaceful.
Take care of yourself
There is so much going on around the holiday season with the end of the semester; make sure to also take some time to invest in yourself. Treat yourself to a present you’ve wanted, take yourself out for a delicious meal, or just take some time to watch your favorite show.
Set boundaries
When possible, pick and choose the things you are going to participate in. It doesn’t make you a bad person if you need a little extra alone time or if you’re choosy about who you spend time with.
